By JJM on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 - 07:36 pm:

Does anyone have any info on what is proposed? I have read the 24hr Polaris discussions with interest and would like to know what the likely format will be.

By GrahamL on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 - 02:24 pm:

JJM
Rog is out here in Dubai next week and we will be putting the finishing touches to the event profile with the view of getting and entry form out soon

By daz on Monday, November 25, 2002 - 08:58 pm:

come on then rog, lets have it in all its glory. your plans for the event. i need as much notice as possible to persuade my partner that it really is a good idea.

Its been two months since Grahams

"putting the finishing touches..... entry form out soon"

statement.

So what's going on with NAVITAC? As my return to Polaris (and Polaris related things) has been delayed by a reluctance to head to the Isle of Man (and other things to do) at Easter, this looks interesting and I'd like to know more.

Any news?

By GrahamL ( - 62.254.64.4) on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 08:43 am:

Tony
Still putting finishing touches to it.
Due to the fact that the whole of the NYMNP moorland area is a SSSI now I had to have meetings with the NPA and English Nature but that is sorted now, only need to meet with FE to sort out a few things.
Will review entry form with Rog tomorrow.
Final format looks like being as previosly discussed
Teams of up to 4, solos are allowed.
3 give out/transition slots but teams can change personnel at any time during event at HQ
mimimum of 2 to ride during night.
Electronic scoring
Other than that we are trying to keep it as simple as possible. Just trying to decide which electronic scoring to use and whether all members should be tagged.
Tony why not do the IOM event

By PW ( - 62.252.32.4) on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 09:39 am:

Re: IOM. Can't speak for Tony, but from my very unscientific but fairly large poll of Polaris regulars the answer to "why not do the IOM event?" will be "can't afford it, I'll do something cheaper instead" for many people, including me.

By Tony Ferrari ( - 193.132.31.237) on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 03:29 pm:

PW has a point, although for me it's not so much the cost, more the hassle, it's much easier to just throw the bike in the car and head off on a Friday night (to spend a few hours marking maps in a darkened marquee - such fun... oops sorry, i'm slipping into a previous thread).

Also the Mrs was put off Polaris type things after experiencing minus 10 degrees in Galloway back in '93 so doesn't take to kindly to me dissapearing over the Easter weekend and "enjoying" myself when she gets stuck at home. For the same reason I never commissaire at MTB races over bank holidays as we prefer to go away together.

If it wasn't Easter I might be tempted but I feel it better to avoid a domestic over my return to Polaris!

Are there any news about navitac out is it still on?

By daz ( - 195.93.34.10) on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 - 11:31 am:

have i missed something? there seems to be an entry form on the site for this event but i cant find an agreed event format. i know graham has already mentioned the overall sketch of the event but what about a final set of rules and a format. or is it there and i just haven't found it?

By harry ( - 195.92.194.14) on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 - 07:42 pm:

I recieved an entry form in the post on Friday. Format is 24hrs in 3 sections, different checkpoints open at different times. 130.00 per team, WHY??. Teams of 2,3,4 or solo. Unfortunately the team format is biased in favour of teams of 4. I reckon the winning strategy is, 1 rider does the first 9hrs, 2 do 6hrs at night(must ride in pairs at night), last rider does the last 9hrs.

If you think 130.00 is excessive for a team of 2, why not offer 90.00 (2 x solo fee)for an entry, are they going to turn business away??

By daz ( - 195.93.50.10) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 08:17 pm:

so rog and graham. the seed of thought is sown. why pay 60-70 quid each? can we just pay 30-35 each for a team of 2. the same as each person in a 4 person team. it does seem rather unfair that just because we only have 1 mate each who pedals (each other) we have to pay double. just think of the extra polaris gear we could buy with that 35 quid in our pockets.

By IanB ( - 217.158.179.177) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 10:31 pm:

It would also be fairer on those wanting to compete as a pair to have their own category - entering as a pair has to make the event a harder proposition than those doing the event as a team of four...

By kevino ( - 195.92.194.12) on Sunday, January 26, 2003 - 06:00 pm:

I cannot understand why there are so few catergories. Super vet men racing against elite men? I don`t think so! Come on Graham give us a chance. I think a lot of people will be put off by not having as many catergories.Even those of us who are not that competative like to see how we have done against others of the same age.

By Harry ( - 195.92.168.171) on Sunday, January 26, 2003 - 09:28 pm:

Why not do what other events do combine the categories / reduce the prizes when you know how many entries you have. The lack of categories implies they anticipate a small entry.

By kevino ( - 195.92.168.174) on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 - 08:58 pm:

Speculate to accumilate

By Harsh but fair ( - 213.38.201.226) on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 05:41 pm:

Oh good lord - do you really think you are going to win? Is THIS why you all enter?

By Russ P ( - 62.64.216.164) on Friday, February 21, 2003 - 05:13 pm:

Changing over teams only at HQ as is implied above seems a bit limited - and incredibly difficult to police, and will make the 1 for 8 hrs 2 for 8hrs 1 for 8 hours the only sensible wway to run the event as the last thing you want to do is waste time returning to base. Why can't teams change personel on the course ?

By Jon B ( - 62.64.206.176) on Saturday, February 22, 2003 - 05:07 pm:

Whether its a good idea or not might be moot
- but it couldn't be easier to police - riders
carry SI cards (electronic tags) which record
exactly when each checkpoint is visited -
presumably there will be a control at base so
it will be easy to see who was there and
when.

By Andy W ( - 195.93.32.11) on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 07:15 pm:

The CPs will doubtless be scattered all around HQ meaning riders will pass reasonably regularly. 5-10 mins to come in and change would seem better than riding for 8 hrs! We shall see!?

By Gary T ( - 130.209.6.40) on Tuesday, February 25, 2003 - 09:12 am:

Graham and Roger,

I think there is a cut off date for cheaper entries for this event set at 1st March. Has there been any change of heart about the fees structure yet? This will influence whether 'I' enter as a pair or a solo.

Cheers, Gary

This thread has a catchier title.
