Totally irrelevant thread nothing to do with PC but a general observation.
Driving to work today in Dubai down the Abu Dhabi whizzway a BMW drove right up my chuff and tailgated me. This is not an unusual occurence out here except that we were doing 160kph at the time. Just like BMW drivers throughout the world he had his fog lights on! He eventually passed me on the hard shoulder between the 4th lane and the armco 200m before the road reduced from 4 lanes to 3, again a common occurence.
Now having cycled all over the place, France, Belgium, Crete, Iceland, UK whenever I have nearly been knocked off there is always a BMW involved with his fog lights on!
Is it me or is it something to do with BMW's?
Anyone else had similar experiences?
Do BMW foglights come on automatically when the ignition is switched on?
Are all BMW drivers anti- bike?
Do all BMW drivers have no spacial perception about the width or length of their vehicles?
Or are they all a bunch of ****s?

Yes!
Yes!
Don't think so?
Yes!
Yes!
Yes they are that too!

I do worry that although I drive a Land Rover, it was built in 2000 when the company was owned by you know who!

But....

It has no fog lights,
Whilst in theory it could (just) get to 160KPH (very steep hill required), it is not a pleasant experience on off road tyres so I don't,
I'm definately not anti-bike, and
BMW drivers do it too me too (despite the potential of being wiped out by 2 tonne of 4x4).

So I'm most probably safe.

I don't think such observations are confined to BMW drivers. In my experience, how ever fast you are going, in any part of the country on any type of road, someone will come tearing up behind you in a blinding hurry wanting to get past at all costs - the more expensive and shiney the car the faster they arrive, and more dangerously they try to overtake.

If I could commute to work off-road, I would - its safer

I Can!

Well about half of it when i'm in the Land Rover (via four different byways) and about three quarters of it on the bike as I can add some bridleways and a couple of cycle tracks.

Only trouble is, it takes a lot longer.

I used to live in Hertford and work in Islington and could cycle the 23 miles to work (if going by road), using only 300 yards of road at each end by using the tow paths of the River Lea, Hertford Union Canal and the Grand Union Canal. Mind you going that way made it 30 miles and took two and a half hours each way, so I didn't do it often.

lets not forget delivery vans. they deserve a special place in all cyclists hearts. oooooopppps!!! forgot mams on the morning school run. i commute to work daily and have done for a year now. i find these 2 groups of people have as a whole caused me a million shakes of my head/fist/fingers. i'm going to pack it in and get a motor as 2 cyclists have been killed on the road i use in the last year. i think i'll buy a beemer.............maybe not
