Royston Vasey - good Pennine base. I know a good hotel....

There was an article published in the local paper of a remote town in Cumbria saying that 1000 mountain bikers were going to descend on the town in the near future. I wonder if that has anything to do with the next Polaris event?

I live in Royston Vasey (near Glossop) and it only has few bridalways out. Also you must remember that "you'll never leave".
Any more on the Cumbria line??

At a guess the three maps could be either 90,91 and 97 or 91 97 and 98 so if it is one of these combinations it looks like it is going to be in the Howgills or around the Dent area if I was to pick one I would go for the second option and have a guess at starting from around Sedburgh
Which local paper was the feature mentioned in?

A friend of friend reckons that the folk local to the event center consider themselves as north easteners (though definately not 'Geordies') but they do their shopping in Carlisle rather than the Metro Centre. However, the majority of sports fans in the (alleged) area support the 'United' that play in St. James Park not Brunton Park. Karens e-mail flyer inviting us to the north east for this autumn's event adds to mystery of the location. North east or north west? Perhaps it's in the middle? My mate's mate reckons we'll all have to keep guessing for a week or two yet before we get to the real fun of hunting down the location of the overnight camp site!

Based on the comments so far, I would hazard a guess of Alston - in Cumbria (which could tie-in with the Local Paper comment)but on the East side of the main Pennines watershed - i.e. sort of "North East" but closer to Carlisle than Newcastle.

Singletrack forum discussed the exact location some weeks back, unsure on reliability of the source, but it put the event just south west of N$!&*�$%!...... Sorry I like the secrecy too much. Have fun trying to find the singletrack discussion though.

there are some lovely golf courses just south of the A69 that I enjoy playing, better than checking kit. After the start I now have nothing to do what with dibbers and all that

North East, North West or in the middle?

I've just glanced at the map of the UK on the wall of my office (here in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire) and noticed that Newcastle is West of here, so that makes the "North East", North West from here???

OK so what have we got so far? Graham L (who I hope can be relied on) says it's North West, In the Pennines (Not the Lake District), South of the A69 and is covered by three OS sheets. Based on that Alan Irving, reckons Howgills or near Dent. However there is a single map for the Howgills (if you use the 1:25,000) so it could be the latter??? But then again a split across OS Sheets 85, 86 and 90 would put up near Alston?

I'm still confused but hoping for Dent as it's not so far to travel!

The entry form states at top "NW Pennines", so taking it at its word and looking at my OS road atlas, that takes in Brampton in the far North to say Appleby-in-Westmorland south, with Alston being right in the middle. Alston looks favourite to me being not far of the C2C cycle route, they must be cycle friendly in that area.
