The weather has been great this week-end on Alston Moor, bit cold and a bit windy but really dry and sunny for October (pity about the forcast though!).
No I haven't been cheatin' and beacuse I'm not competing you can't deduct 10 points or make me overnight at Keilder!
I've been in the area checking out final details for the overnight camp etc. and no you'll not find out where it is from this message but you can start guessin'.
The overnight camp site owner (a wonderful and helpful lady, clue 1) has just had a new fence build between the site and the adjacent river (clue 2) and asks us to use the gap left in the fence to gain access to the river for water and not to climb the fence. Please respect this request.
There are two rivers/streams flowing past the camp site (clue 3) one much smaller than the other and the site is quite large, flat and bumpy (clues 4,5&6) some of the best pitches will be at the far side of the site near the confluence of the streams and will be worth getting there early for.
One more request in exchange for all these clues, please don't wash bikes upstream of the campsite (don't wash them at all in my opinon)!
One final clue. For those who guessed, on another thread, that the overnight camp is at Blanchland, I can say that neither river mentioned above is the river Derwent! (Clue 7 or lie No.1?)
Now, who's for a few pints down the pub to watch the England match.......(Football of course)!

John
You did not mention the pub.
I bet it was freezing, I was at Kingston Park watching the Falcons stuff Gloucester and it was so cold I had to dig my gloves out.

Pub? What about the toilets? Last autumn we had to walk miles for a c**p. Some people gave up and used the bushes. Lets get our priorities right here!

By GrahamL ( - 80.6.68.85) on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 - 04:08 pm:

There will be toilets on the field

Were there any bushes on the way to the toilets on the Lakes event?

The story of why the toilets were such a long way out on that event is a long one...but basically the company who quoted never looked at the site prior to offering to do the job... that was as far as they would take them.

No we need a Pub,you get a pub you also get a toilet with a telly!

By JAL ( - 81.135.116.197) on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 - 10:56 pm:

Don't think too many people will be keen to cycle to the pub for the footy, beer or toilets. The nearest pub to the overnight is long, long way! There is mobile phone reception at the O/N for those that want to phone home or check on the result! By the way Graham remind me of the rules for those recieving outside suport during the event and dosn't this rule preclude competitors nipping off to the pub from the overnight, even to watch the tely? Do we need to post guards on the gate?

JAL, or GrahamL, would you recommend that we brought water purification tablets as it seems from the above that the water supply is going to be a river.

By GrahamL ( - 81.105.85.4) on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 - 06:31 pm:

Daft question, we always recommend water prification tablets even if water id from a bowser.
Either use tablets or boil the water.

Sorry JAL, but i find all this clue buisiness about the
overnight camp a bit silly. its suppossed to be a secret, if
people know the area fine. The clues are against the spirit
of the event and add nothing to the experience.

I'm afraid all those who do not look at the web site will
justifiably complain if they are not given a clue sheet
containing your clues to the the over night camp at
registration.

tomorrow is friday so you have time to photocopy clue
slips,

Knowing in advance where the camp site is doesn't help that much - you can't predict which checkpoints are active and what their scores will be so you can't plan your route to take the camp location into account.

Its a bit of a pointless exercise trying to guess if you ask me...

By john h ( - 212.56.88.32) on Friday, October 10, 2003 - 04:29 pm:

you can plan better strategies knowing where the end point
for the day is though.
